Task 3

Job Roles Within Film & TV

With Film and TV companies, there are a lot of job opportunities to go for if you want to work within the Film & TV industry. The list of the main job titles include being a film director, director of photography, film producer, camera men, film editor, animator, lighting technician, runner, location manager / scouter, sound technician, programme researcher and hair and makeup artists. Under each of those job roles, there are normally a lot of people working together doing the same thing or there would be different types of that certain job role. For example, with animation there is normally a whole team working together to create a movie (70 people animated together Frozen 2). An example of a job role where there are different types, would be with camera men/women, were there would be the main camera, the camera assistant and normally 2 more sets of those people.

My Skills Within Film & TV

So far, my own experience with the film and tv industry is very small, but I have done a few things where I have learned new skills and how certain pieces of equipment are used.

The programs I know how to use to at least a basic knowledge and have had personal experience with are Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Audition, Adobe Lightroom, Final Cut Pro X, DaVinci Resolve 17, Affinity Photo, Garage Band and Logic Pro X. I also know a bit of 3D design using Autodesk’s Fusion 360.  I thought I would teach my self the basic knowledge of all these programs, especially the Adobe software’s as I am more used to Apples Final Cut Pro X and Logic Pro X than I am with Adobe’s equivalents just so I have a basic understanding of any program in case I get asked to use one of those programs specifically.

I also have skills when it comes to using cameras as well, teaching my self the importance of different focal depths with different lenses to get a certain shot, how lighting can be used correctly, the different angles you can choose from and when to use them, as well as learning all the manual controls and what each button on the cameras do, like controlling the ISO acting as a gain or adjusting the shutter speed or aperture depending on the situation. I taught my self all this by watching YouTube videos on the current cinema cameras used like the Red Komodo or Canon’s series of cinema cameras, as well as using my own camera first hand which is a DSLR Canon 750d with a variety of lenses and filters.

Another thing which no one realises how important it is, is sound in Film & TV. Therefore I have now learned the basics of sound, learning the different facts about frequencies, the different wave lengths of those frequencies and how they can affect the slightest of things, as well as first hand learning how to use a mixing desk along with parametric and graphic equalizers when recording instruments like drums using dynamic mic’s and bass guitars as well as vocals. Microphones also come under sound within Film & TV so I have recently been teaching myself what different microphones do and what they are used for as well as how they work. I currently have a Rode Video Mic Pro+ which is a shotgun mic so I have attempted at making foley sounds with this microphone as shotgun mic’s are great for recording sound effects.

What skills you need for certain jobs

Directing:

You would need good communication skills, creativity, being a good listener, and something that every job needs which is patience.

Director of Photography / Cinematography:

Knowledge with cameras, need to know how to frame and angle a shot properly, basic lighting and audio knowledge, patience.

Film Editor:

Good listener, creativity, patience, knowledge with many programs.

The way how you would get into most of these job roles would be by making your own short films and sending them off to film festivals to get noticed that way without even having to go to school to learn Film. Another way could be by going to film school or by going to a college or university where they can give you recommendations and briefs on your work where you could then apply to work for a big film company.
